The Great Apes

The great apes are a taxonomic family of primates that include eight species (see on the right) in four genera:

  1. Pongo
    • Bornean Orangutan
    • Sumatran Orangutan
    • Tapanuli Orangutan
  2. Gorilla
    1. Western Gorilla
    2. Eastern Gorilla
  3. Pan
    1. Chimpanzee
    2. Bonobo
  4. Homo
    1. Homo Sapiens

The Hylobates (Gibbons) are a seperate genus originating from the same superfamily as the Hominidae and are therefore not considered to be 'great apes'.
